Christmas on the Dial
Some Songs Find You
Christmas on the Dial is a full-length holiday play staged as a live 1950s Christmas Eve radio broadcast, and your audience is the studio audience from the moment the doors open. The stage is split in two. On one side, radio station WMRG puts out its Christmas Eve show: two hosts at vintage microphones, a floor manager working applause placards, period sponsor spots, and a run of Christmas standards in crooner, jazz and big band style. On the other side is a present-day attic, where a group of kids has found an old radio that is somehow pulling in that broadcast, seventy years later. Maggie, the oldest, is trying to remember the one song their great-grandfather played every Christmas Eve, and the broadcast plays everything but that one. A narrator in an armchair carries the audience through both worlds. Audience sing-alongs and a moment on stage for children from the audience are built in.

The Miss Cumberland Pageant
You find the killer. You pick the queen.
In this comedy-mystery, it’s the 75th annual Miss Cumberland Pageant, and your audience is the pageant crowd. They are given programs and People’s Choice ballots. The best contestant and shoo-in for the crown arrives late and alone, and by the talent portion half the building has a reason to want her gone. Then the lights fail. When they come back, there’s a dead body on the stage. An off-duty deputy in row C swears in the entire audience as witnesses. Your audience questions the suspects, votes on who did it, and crowns Miss Cumberland.

Last Dance at the Starlite
They met here first. They’ll dance here last.
The Starlite is closing for good, and its last night is a Valentine’s dance. Walt and Peggy met in this building almost fifty years ago. Tonight they sit at the edge of the floor and watch their whole life play out on it, arguing about what actually happened. The prom in a flooded-gym year. The college formal he was not invited to. The wedding, because where else. The skating years, and the years nobody talks about. Their daughter’s wedding, and now this. The music changes with the building, from crooner standards to the songs their granddaughter knows, played by whoever was on the bandstand at the time. The hall closes. They dance anyway.

Where a stage play runs
A school auditorium, a theater or a church, with 200 seats or more. The Miss Cumberland Pageant needs a theater, for its full blackout. The venue’s own crew runs sound and lights, and that staffing is quoted with the room. A room whose sound cannot carry the show is the wrong room.
